Former Professional Psychic Medium Warns That New Age Practices Are Infiltrating the Church

For Immediate Release (Long Island, NY) — Author Jenn Nizza received her first tarot reading in her mother's basement beauty shop when she was a child, and within a decade she was a working psychic medium in New York. In "Darkness in Disguise: A Biblical Warning About Spiritual Deception in Our Culture," Nizza offers a first-person account of her days as a practicing psychic and of the night she abandoned it forever.

Nizza warns that tarot, astrology, and mediums draw large audiences on social media platforms, mostly aimed at young women. Nizza says the practices she once made a living from are no longer confined to occult bookshops, but are overtly infiltrating books, movies, and TV shows that purposefully target children.

"When I look at online videos of young girls giving readings or participating in all sorts of New Age practices, I wonder how many of them are truly suffering in the shadows," Nizza says. "They might be struggling with OCD or depression or debilitating anxiety, but they cover it up. Like a character out of Harry Potter, they seek meaning in the world of magic. They’re captivated by books, films, and television shows about witches and magical creatures. They love the power of it, and they want to be a part of it. Anything to take their minds off the reality of their mundane lives. They never really deal with their real-life heartaches. Instead, they look for solace in the supernatural. If they practice it and become leaders in it, they interpret their success as a sign of approval, and as a result, they become increasingly trapped by a lie that brings no lasting relief to the struggles they hide from the world."

Each of the book's twelve chapters opens with a real-life scene from Nizza's years in the New Age/occult, then leads the reader to scriptures in the Bible that warn against such practices. The narrative sections describe client sessions, as well as an escalating series of encounters with demons that she says left her afraid to be alone in her own house.

“A darkness had settled into my soul that I didn’t understand,” says Nizza. “I began to see evil spirits manifested in my home — standing over me — and it scared me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had made myself a slave of the devil and I didn’t understand what a cruel master he was. But God was tenderizing my conscience, and He began showing me the evil I was playing with so that I could come to the end of myself.”

The book's turning point comes after a late-night drive home from a reading. Nizza writes that after encountering another demonic spirit, she nearly wrecked her car, made it home shaking, and called out to Jesus for the first time.

“I came face to face with my own death,” writes Nizza. “In that moment I had no hope, only fear. And from the depths of that fear, Jesus’ name came to my lips. In my moment of despair, I called His name and not the name of my spirit guides. It was a desperate plea — but a sincere one — and one that came as a gift of God’s grace, changing me and drawing me to Himself.”

In the book, Nizza warns her fellow Christians about using New Age phrases such as: "Manifest your own reality," or "The power of healing is within you."

"I’m often saddened by how many Christians use terminology from the New Age and engage in practices such as astrology,” says Nizza. “When confronted about it, they frequently shrug their shoulders and dismiss it as an area of Christian liberty. Christians don't have any license to believe false teaching and engage in practices God has forbidden in His Word. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5 to ‘take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness but instead expose them.’”

Nizza says the teachings of the Bible and New Age movement cannot co-exist.

“The need to warn and expose the lies of the New Age is great, but too many Christians are deceived by it, don’t think it’s a real problem, or underestimate the influence of Satan in this fallen world,” says Nizza. “I can’t emphasize enough how much of a problem it is. Not only the blatant false teachings about karma, mediumship, astrology, law of attraction, energy healing, and past lives, but the subtle embrace of New Age thinking by many Christians. New Age beliefs disregard God’s power and control in our lives and puts that power in our own hands. That’s a recipe for disaster. The choice is clear— we are either children of God or children of the devil. Working for the devil destroys peace and leads only to destruction. Take it from someone who knows —this isn’t just a mere possibility; it’s a guarantee.”
