Is Dark Matter Evidence for God?
Ex-Atheist Makes the Case in New Science-Faith Book

For Immediate Release (Sacramento, CA) — In a cultural moment when science and faith are often framed as enemies, a new book is challenging that narrative head-on. In “Beyond Chance: From the Big Bang to the Empty Tomb,” scientist and former atheist Steve Osborne, PhD, presents the case that two of modern science’s most profound mysteries — dark matter and the origin of the first cell — align with the biblical claim that creation reveals its Creator.

Modern cosmology now teaches that only about 5% of the universe consists of visible matter — the stars, planets, galaxies, and even our own bodies. According to Osborne, approximately 68% is dark energy and 27% is dark matter — forces that cannot be directly observed but are essential to cosmic structure.

Dark matter, he explains, forms invisible halos around galaxies and provides the gravitational force necessary to hold them together. Without it, galaxies would simply fly apart. Dark energy, by contrast, functions like “cosmic antigravity,” pushing galaxies away from each other and accelerating the expansion of the universe.

“In a universe full of invisible forces, dark matter acts like cosmic glue, holding the structure of the cosmos together; quiet, unseen, but absolutely essential,” says Osborne. “If we accept dark matter and dark energy by how they affect our world, why not consider God the same way — unseen, yet known by what He does? The heavens do not whisper God’s existence. They shout it.”

Osborne says this is not a “God of the gaps” argument, but a reflection of what Scripture has long affirmed — that the invisible realm undergirds the visible one.

While the cosmos presents staggering scale, Osborne turns next to something much smaller — the first living cell. Origin-of-life research has often suggested that life emerged gradually from simple chemistry in a “primordial soup” or self-assembled. But modern molecular biology has complicated that story.

Osborne highlights a landmark scientific experiment in which researchers engineered what is known as a “Minimal Cell.” To understand how much intricacy is needed for life to exist, scientists created an artificial “Minimal Cell.” Starting with a bacterium, they removed genes one by one until the cell could no longer survive. Even in its stripped-down form, the cell still needed 473 genes and over half a million DNA base pairs. Most strikingly, 149 of the essential genes had unknown functions — yet removing any of them killed the cell.

“Rather than imagining a simple mix of chemicals floating in a warm pond, the Minimal Cell paints a picture of cellular complexity and interdependence,” says Osborne. “If life at its most basic level demands such extreme design, then the natural question is unavoidable: could blind, unguided natural processes truly account for the origin of life, or does the evidence point to the deliberate work of an intelligent Creator?”

Osborne says “Beyond Chance” does not dismiss science, but instead, relies on it. Osborne affirms the Big Bang, cosmic inflation, dark matter research, molecular genetics, and laboratory studies in origin-of-life science. His argument is not that science is wrong — but that science consistently reveals layers of order, information, and precision that point to something beyond chance.

“I wanted this book to present a clear and accessible case that design — not unguided nature —offers the best explanation for life, humanity, reason, and meaning,” says Osborne. “Affirming God as Creator does not replace science. It grounds it.”

While the book spans cosmology and biology, its ultimate destination is theological, culminating in the Resurrection. Osborne argues that if the universe has a beginning, if unseen forces sustain it, and if life’s informational structure defies randomness, then it is reasonable to consider that the same Creator could step into history.

“There are certain historical facts we know about the Resurrection,” says Osborne. “There was an empty tomb; there were multiple appearances of Jesus after His death; there were radical conversions in people such as the Apostle Paul; and there was an explosive rise of the early church. After examining the alternative explanations of the Resurrection — legend, myth, hallucination, stolen body — only an actual Resurrection explains all the facts.”

Osborne says his book ultimately draws a perpetual line from cosmology all the way to the empty tomb,

“If Jesus remained in the grave, Christianity is a mistake,” he says. “If He rose, then the same divine power that created the universe could also raise Jesus from the grave. Creation reveals intelligence. The Resurrection shows redemption. The resurrection confirms that forgiveness is real, that death is defeated, and that love has conquered despair. If the evidence leads to the empty tomb — which I believe it does —the verdict is clear: Christ is risen.”

About the Author:

Steve Osborne, PhD, is an experimental psychologist who has published peer-reviewed research. Once a skeptic himself, he began a personal and intellectual journey that led him to embrace Christianity as both rational and true. He served as a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation and a guest reviewer for two peer-reviewed scientific journals. He received his PhD in Experimental Psychology from Arizona State University and his undergraduate degree from UC San Diego, where he graduated with highest honors. His book, “Beyond Chance: From the Big Bang to the Empty Tomb,” integrates discoveries in cosmology, biology, and archaeology with biblical theology. He lives in Northern California and continues to write, teach, and speak on issues of faith and reason. For more information visit: https://www.steveosbornebooks.com/.
