New radio show focuses on helping parents navigate through the teen years
For Immediate Release (Houston, TX) — Author, speaker and television host, Shannon Perry has launched a new radio show entitled “Got Teens?” on Salem Radio station KKHT in Houston, Texas. Perry answers questions from parents of teens she has met either in one-on-one counseling sessions or during her mother/teen daughter conference tour, “In Her Shoes.” Perry says the questions range from the common problems of simply learning how to communicate with teens to more pressing issues of identity.
“We are living in a culture that is doing everything it can to confuse our girls and tell them that not only does it not matter what they do with a guy, it doesn’t matter what they do with a girl,” says Perry. “The issue of gender identity was something I addressed long before our government decided that we should be accepting of everything that goes against God’s Word. I am very clear on this issue with the girls, and I give them Biblical and real-life reasons as to why it is important to refrain from same-sex relationships. Girls tell me they often feel very pressured to be accepting of the gender issues our culture so heavily skews. As Christians, we’ve got to know how to address this issue because it is not going away.”
Perry garnered the Bronze Medal in the Christian Living category from the Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest for her book for teen girls entitled “Stand: Staying Balanced with Answers for Real Teen Life.” Perry wrote the book after meeting with ten teen and tween girls in her home for over two months. The book delves into several difficult issues such as gender identity, bullying, suicide, cutting, drugs, and pre-marital sex, just to name a few. “Stand” also serves as an informational resource for Perry’s mother/teen daughter conference entitled In Her Shoes.
“At our ‘In Her Shoes’ events, we discuss the advantages of remaining pure, having morals and what to do when temptation comes and how girls feel when their friends have boyfriends and they don’t,” says Perry. “I also address the girls who may have already had sex, reminding them of God’s grace and how they can start over.”
Perry created one of the first anti-bullying programs for one of the nation’s largest public-school systems, and she addresses both traditional bullying and cyberbullying in her events as well.
“Bullying has become an epidemic and social media has only exacerbated it,” says Perry. “Parents and students need to know specific counter measures that can dissuade bullies from acting out. When we confront a bully, we need to do so with confidence, assurance and in a calm way. If we lose our composure or get angry or cry, they will view that as weakness, which just feeds their behavior. One particular trick I learned was just to agree with a bully; it totally throws them off! For example, if a bully calls you fat just say, ‘You know, I have gained a few pounds lately, thanks for noticing.’ They don’t know how to respond to agreement.”
