Q&A with Karen Kingsbury
Author of "The Baxters—A Prequel"
Q: What will people learn in the prequel that might be a surprise?
A: There are many surprises in “The Baxters” – A Prequel”! The book takes place a few years before the previous “Book One”, on the day of Kari Baxter’s wedding to Professor Tim Jacobs. Kari’s longtime first love was Ryan Taylor, and shockingly, Ryan shows up at Kari’s house the early afternoon of her wedding day. It’s pouring rain, and he knocks on the door, desperate for one last conversation with her before she changes her name. Whether the reader is new to the Baxters or not, this scene will stay with them forever! There is also a very near tragedy that takes place, where Landon Blake saves a Baxter child’s life — this will also be a very surprising and dramatic revelation.
Q: The new television show about The Baxters is now in production. What can you tell us about it so far?
A: “The Baxters” TV show has completed three seasons and is ready to be aired! It is a family drama that — I believe — will capture the nation’s heart. Last week, I spoke with the cast in a Zoom interview and was thrilled to see how excited they are to film seasons four and beyond. These talented actors truly bring to life the Baxter characters. They each acknowledged that this show is something extraordinary. The three seasons filmed follow the first three books in the original Baxter series — “Redemption”, “Remember”, and “Return”. I had the chance to edit the scripts, so I can confidently say this TV show will be very much like the books. The exciting thing about “The Baxters – A Prequel”, is that it perfectly sets up the TV show.
Q: Any big names we should know about starring in or involved with the TV show?
A: There are some very big names in The Baxters TV show. Roma Downey plays Elizabeth Baxter, the matriarch of the family. Roma was the star of the long-running series Touched by an Angel as well as many other movies and TV shows. She is also the executive producer of The Baxters. Ted McGinley plays Dr. John Baxter, the patriarch of the Baxter family. Ted has starred in many iconic TV series including Happy Days and The Love Boat. Ted is literally the perfect actor to play this key role. In addition, there are a number of very talented young actors playing the Baxter adult kids.
Q: Was it difficult writing a prequel?
A: It was completely organic writing a prequel to the Baxter family saga. The story of Kari Baxter’s wedding to Professor Tim Jacobs is one that has lived in my heart for many years. It was a piece of the family’s history that needed to be told. Readers will love it! This story sets up not only the TV show, but also the entire Baxter series. From here on out, “The Baxters – A Prequel” will be the new Book One with this family.
Q: What is your next project?
A: My next project is a book called “Just Once”. It is a stand-alone World War II novel that tells the unforgettable love story of Irvel Myers and two brothers —both of whom will serve overseas in the war effort. The research for this project has been so enjoyable. I am fully immersed in this beautiful book and cannot wait for readers to have it in their hands in spring 2023! In addition, there are more movies and TV shows coming soon. I’m also working on doing a film of my own, based on one of my books.
